ZERO-DEFECT manufacturing Clustering & Networking Initiative





midemma-2The main goal of the MIDEMMA project is to give a global solution for the 'zero defect' approach in micromanufacturing. The working methodology will be based on the development of extensive process monitoring devices and techniques for the generation of a data rich environment.

Thanks to this data generation, adaptive process control methodologies and smart decision making tools will be developed and applied in order to avoid defect generation during micro-manufacturing processes.

The MIDEMMA consortium is formed by 17 partners from 7 countries, with a good mix of academic partners, independent research institutes and industrial companies and SMEs. The obtained results will be evaluated by their application to 10 different test-cases from the industrial end-users within the consortium.

Midemma:   MInimizing DEfects in Micro-Manufacturing Applications




The primary goal of MEGaFiT is to develop and integrate all necessary technologies that create the basis to reduce the number of defects in manufacturing of complex high-precision metal parts.

This will be achieved by developing and integrating in-depth process knowledge, in-line measurement and real-time adaptive process control.

The MEGaFiT consortium consists of 16 partners who together cover the required knowledge and expertise in all these fields. Proof will be given on two pilot production lines in industrial settings, one on multi-stage micro-forming and one on additive manufacturing of customized parts.

The vision of IFaCOM is to achieve near zero defect level of manufacturing for all kinds of manufacturing, with emphasis on production of high value parts, on large variety custom design manufacturing and on high performance products.

This shall be achieved through:

  • Improved performance process control to reduce defect output and reduce the costs of defect avoidance
  • Enhanced quality control to obtain more predictable product quality
  • Enhanced manufacturing process capability independent of manufactured parts

The objectives are to reach a level of excellence for a systematic body of knowledge on near zero defect manufacturing output through improved process control.

IFaCOM:   Intelligent Fault Correction and self Optimizing Manufacturing systems




This project aims at developing an innovative Quality Control System that will drastically change the current concept of End Of Line quality control, going beyond currently established methodologies such as Six-sigma and SPC.It will prevent the generation of defects within the process at single stage and the propagation of defects between processes at multi-stage system level. This Quality Control System will be proactive, offering three different solution strategies to avoid End of Line defects:

 Elimination of the predicted defect through adjustment of process characteristics by proactively intervening on the inputs to the process (process parameters, etc.)

  • On-line reworking of the product in order to eliminate the defect
  • On-line workpiece repair through defect elimination at consecutive process stages.

Technological developments will be based on the design and development of new hardware technologies, techniques and software solutions that in turn are based on real-time multi-data gathering by the integration of new sensor and inspection equipment, development of intelligent actuators and the of new monitoring and prognosis knowledge-based models. To develop a universal system able to be integrated into different production processes, its feasibility will be demonstrated in machining and assembly processes at both macro and micro product scales.
